Let’s be honest: working in healthcare isn't just a job; it’s a completely different lifestyle.Between endless charting, skipping lunches, and explaining exactly how to start a 24-hour urine collection for the hundredth time, the clinic life asks a lot of us. After a decade working as a Medical Assistant—with the last eight years deep in the wild world of Urology—I know firsthand that surviving a busy shift requires a sense of humor, immense patience, and a solid support system. That is exactly what National Nurses Week (May 6–12) is all about: recognizing the people who hold the clinic together.

A Quick History: Why May 6–12?

You might wonder why Nurses Week falls on these specific dates every year. It actually took over 40 years of advocacy to make it happen! The push started back in 1953, but it wasn't until 1974 that the International Council of Nurses designated May 12th as "International Nurse Day" in honor of Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Finally, in 1982, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation officially recognizing May 6th as "National Recognition Day for Nurses." By 1993, the American Nurses Association expanded the celebration to a full, permanent week (May 6–12).

Why It Still Matters Today

Florence Nightingale modernized nursing by pushing for better sanitation and patient care standards during the Crimean War. Today, that same drive for patient advocacy is what keeps modern clinics running.Nurses Week isn't just about free pizza in the breakroom (though we will always take the free pizza). It is about acknowledging the emotional and physical toll of the job. It is a time to pause and truly thank the charge nurses, the floor staff, and your favorite work besties who make the hard days bearable.

Gear Made for the Grind

I started DatScrubLife because I wanted to create accessories that actually speak to our daily reality. Since I am still working my clinic shifts, every item is designed and hand-pressed by me with the healthcare grind in mind.If you want to treat yourself or grab a gift for your favorite coworker, here is what we are currently pressing:

  • Sublimated Tumblers: The cardinal rule of the clinic is that your coffee will get cold and your water will get warm. Our fully sublimated tumblers won't peel or fade, and they keep your hydration exactly the temperature it needs to be.
  • Custom Mugs: For that essential pre-shift (and mid-shift) caffeine boost, complete with designs that only another healthcare worker would truly understand.
  • Charting Station Mousepads: Brighten up the absolute bleakness of the clinic computer stations. A fun mousepad makes the endless hours of charting just a little bit better.
  • Heavy-Duty Badge Holders: Your ID badge goes through a lot. Our badge holders are designed to be durable, functional, and add a quick pop of personality to your scrubs.
  • Coming Soon—Sublimated Journals! Perfect for keeping track of vitals, taking report notes, or just writing down the most ridiculous things patients say during a shift. Keep an eye out for these launching soon!
